Today, on my birthday, I'm reflecting on the stories that shape me. One of them is the story behind my latest song, a piece that's deeply personal and meaningful to me. I'd like to share with you the thoughts, emotions, and experiences that inspired this song, and what it means to me….
Speaking My Truth: The Story Behind My Song
I’ve always believed that what other people think of me is “their business, not mine”. This mantra has been a guiding light in my life, and it’s the heart and soul of the song I’ve recently written. Writing this song was more than just creating music—it was about owning my truth and unapologetically stepping into my authenticity.
When I say, “What other people think of me is their business, not mine,”
some might hear it as indifference or even arrogance. But that couldn’t be farther from the truth. It’s not that I don’t care about others or the way they perceive me—after all, I’m human, and I value connection, love, and understanding. What I mean is that I refuse to let other people’s opinions define who I am.
Here’s the thing: people see the world—and each other—through their own lens. Their thoughts about me often have less to do with me and more to do with their own experiences, biases, and insecurities. So, why should I carry the weight of someone else’s projections?
But let me be clear: this doesn’t mean I shut myself off from feedback or live in an echo chamber. I deeply value the thoughts and reflections of those in my inner circle—my family and close friends. Their insights mean the world to me because they come from a place of love and genuine care. I use their perspectives as opportunities to reflect and grow, always striving to show up as a better version of myself each day.
The difference is that I don’t give people outside of that trusted circle the power to hurt me with their opinions. I don’t take it personally because I know it’s not about me. It’s just their perspective, their projection. And that’s okay. I can’t control that, but I “can” control how I respond.
Writing this song was a cathartic experience. It’s a declaration of self-love and self-acceptance, a reminder to myself and anyone listening that we don’t have to shrink ourselves to fit into someone else’s narrative. We all deserve to shine in our own unique light, unapologetically and authentically.
So, if you’ve ever felt weighed down by what others think, I hope this song—and this message—reminds you that their opinions don’t define you. You define you. Speak your truth. Shine your light. And never give away your power.
Thank you for letting me share a piece of my heart with you. I hope this song resonates with you as much as it does with me.
